This week the children have written a book review for our class novel Paddington.

When they’re reading at home this week, you could ask book review style questions like; “Who are the characters in this book?” “What is the plot of the story?” “Would you recommend this book to a friend?” “How many stars would you give this book out of 5?”

Class Assembly Script

The children have been given copies of the script for our class assembly with their lines highlighted, please encourage your child to practise their lines at home. They also have the lyrics of ‘Someone Special’ by Coldplay as we will sing this as a class. Our class assembly is on 11th November.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 03.10.25- 'Even if they sin seven times a day and seven times a night, you must forgive them'- Luke 17:1-10

Our theme this week in our liturgy has been about keeping your faith strong, especially when people have sinned against you. The children reflected on the word of the Gospel and how Jesus teaches us to always forgive and the children used our class motto to reflect on this beautifully. The children were able to link this to our RE lessons this week as we focused on what a sin is and how we use our conscience to prevent us from making sins.

Excitement has certainly been ramped up in English as we have began preparing our planning stage for our first narrative write on our class novel. The children have loved applying their own spin to important characters in the book and are already thinking about what pieces of creative writing can they draw from this.

Today has also been our forest school takeover day as we spent the morning getting mucky, climbing trees, relaxing in hammocks and coming together as a team around the fire. We then spent the rest of the morning continuing with our properties of materials topic in Science as we looked at ‘solubility’ with a very interesting practical session to go with this. Tell your parents about what we were doing and the science behind each of the glasses.

Virtue Star of the Week: Our virtues for this half term are learned and wise. Our winner this week goes to Hugo. You are just so helpful Hugo! You are always wanting to help both your teachers and your classmates. You have taken to life as an upper junior with real maturity, along with your leadership roles, and your teachers really do appreciate all of the support you are providing.

Learning Certificate Winner of the Week: Our winner this week goes to Bea for being an enthusiastic and creative learner. You are just an absolute joy when it comes to creative writing lessons Bea! You just love to write and to apply your own imaginative description in our writing, whilst also using our newly learned grammar skills. This stems from your enthusiasm and love of writing as to why you have produced such excellent pieces of work- keep this up!

  • Parent’s Day is on Friday October 24th - a great chance for us to have a good chat about how your child is doing. This year, we have two options - we can meet face to face at school, or you may choose to have an online Teams meeting with me. Year 5 Parents Day options

  • Homework- Please check the homework blog for your child’ weekly homework, including the deadline date.

  • Sports Timetable- A full timetable for all of the sports opportunities this half term is available on the sports page of the school website [engage-sport] along with sports fixtures for this half term.

  • Year 5 Class Assembly Tuesday 14th October- The children will be performing their assembly twice in the morning. First assembly will begin at 9:15am and the next at 9:35am. You are welcome to attend both of these if you would like.

  • Year 5 Book Look Tuesday 21st October- This will be held at 9:15am and this gives you parents a chance to have a look at your child’s work so far in Year 5.

Year 3 Weekly Blog Friday 2nd October - And He said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.”

As we head into the month of October we have been talking lots about Mary, as this is the month of the Rosary. Our Prayer leaders have led us beautifully in prayer as we have said the first decade of the rosary together. Over the next month we will be saying the Rosary regularly together, if your child has a Rosary at home they are welcome to bring it in to use when we pray the Rosary.

This week...

Autumn is definitely arrived. the nursery garden is full of leaves!! We catch sweep them up fast enough. We hope the windy weather that is on it’s way will blow them away.

We have had great fun this week with all our learning! We have have been matching shapes, measuring worms (not real ones!), counting key on to a key ring and practising our fundamental movement skills with Mr. Nay, phew!!

Worship

This week in Worship we have continued our ‘Creation and Covenant’ topic with ‘The Sign of the Cross’. Our key words this week are CROSS, PRAYER and SIGN.

We learnt the words and the actions, we are so good at this! God is love. When we make the sign of the cross, we remember that He loves us and we are part of His family. Have a go here.

On Thursday we chose our first prayer leaders. They led us in our Worship and showed us how to make the sign of the cross and how we should hold our hands while we said a ‘Hail Mary’. Our worship was all about kindness. We heard about love and kindness in the Gospel (Luke 6:35) and spoke about how we have been kind to our family and friends. We then wrote down our acts of kindness and put them into our kindness bucket! We are so excited to fill our bucket.

Also, this week we made a prayer garden in our outside area. We made a HUGE cross of ‘ ‘Hope’ to put in the centre. We all then said a Hail Mary standing around our new garden. It was so moving. Take a look.

Meet Three!

We met a new Numberblock this week….3. We have explored the part-part whole structure. combining 2 with 1 to make 3.

‘Threeness’ of 3

At the beginning of the episode TWO lies horizontally to illustrate that he is still TWO even though he is in a different orientation. This idea is built on later when THREE changes his arrangement from a three block tower to an L shaped block. THREE is also represented next to TWO in a line from left to right. This places THREE as one more than TWO and TWO is one more than ONE. The staircase representation of ONE, TWO and THREE is a powerful image that helps children to see that the difference between adjacent counting numbers is 1.

Counting to 3

Counting involves knowing the order of the number names and assigning one number tag to one object or event. This episode uses the counting sequence “one, two, three” to objects and characters from well known stories. Click here to watch the episode.

Meet ‘d’

A busy week brain growing! The children were introduced to the new sound ‘d’.

Family Mass

This Sunday is our Family Mass at church. It would be so lovely to see all our families there. It starts at 9.30 am at Our Lady Star of the Sea church. It is our first family mass of the year and to welcome all our new families to school and church. We look forward to seeing you there.

Everyone has now completed their star reader assessment and has been to the library to choose a book. Lots and lots of reading to help achieve our class word goal and to also help bring your writing skills alive!

Times Tables

Lots of TTRS practice to keep being super speedy- a large majority of the Year 5 Maths curriculum is based on solid times tables knowledge so keep practicing- even if you have already gone green!

Spellings

The children have a spelling sheet to complete which is based on this weeks spellings. The children should be familiar with how to complete this as we have practiced this in our spelling lesson.

Vocabulary check- Our tricky Year 5 spellings are the final 5 spellings on our test. Use a dictionary to find the definitions of these words and write them in your homework book.

Optional Homework

In English, we have all created our mythological creatures for our The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe story. You had just a small attempt at bringing your creature to life through art. Create a poster of your mythological creature with detailed characteristics, body parts, special abilities etc. Try to also include your creature’s habitat and occupation as well.

Year 1 Weekly Blog 3.10.25 - "A family full of faith is a family full of joy."

This week we listened to a piece of scripture all about faith… and how even in little faith, God can do great things… Year 1 have reflected on the word faith, understanding that it means believing in God. Our mission was to spread God’s love to everybody!

On Monday evening we turned our classroom around slightly… and the children’s reactions were just brilliant! As they stepped into the classroom on Tuesday morning they were so excited to see the changes, “I feel like Year 6!” all with huge beaming smiles. Every child has been given a table place and new carpet space as we now lean more towards whole class learning with provision challenges along the sides of the classroom. After observing our children we knew they were very much ready for this next step in their learning! We are so proud of each one of them and their thirst for learning. Year 1 you are just wonderful!

Going deeper in conversation

This week we had our final Kidsafe session and all children have been awarded a certificate for participating. We spent time evaluating our Kidsafe learning and the children all felt that it was very important! Some comments from the children were: “Every child should do Kidsafe because they feel it helps them know what to do.” “I know how to use my strong voice because sometimes when I’m worried a just have a quiet voice.” “I loved celebrating KS’s birthday it was lots of fun.” “We know what to do if we get yukky feelings.”

Magic moments

In English we have been exploring the story of Supertato and there has been a lot of laughter this week as we stepped into the role of the characters Miss Carrot, Mr Broccoli and Mrs Cucumber. It was wonderful to see the children have so much fun acting out the various emotions and dilemmas that the characters have faced and to hear them using such descriptive language such as alarmed, startled, stunned and bamboozled!

Let’s celebrate

A huge well done to Ralph who has received our Star virtue award this week for all of his learned and wise actions. Ralph you have joined in with our discussions beautifully, sharing your wondering questions and wise reflections on our topics and focus words. Thank you for sharing these ideas so we can all grow together!

This week we also celebrate Lillie who has been an enthusiastic Bobby Bee this week. Lillie, you have shown a genuine excitement towards your learning and we have loved seeing how this passion has reflected in your work and the example you have set for others. Thank you for bringing a love of learning to our classroom!

Sunday Mass - This Sunday we celebrate and welcome our new Reception class. If you are able to make it, mass starts at 9:30, thank you!

Hello Yellow Day - On Friday next week (10th October) All children are invited to wear yellow on Friday in support of Youth mental health.

Homework and reading books - A huge thank you for the great success on Monday with the amount of homework books that were brought back with homework completed. We really appreciate your hard work, at home, as it really does have such a great impact. I look forward to spending time looking at all completed home learning next week (Monday) before sending them back home on Tuesday.

Forest school children - remember your change of clothes on Thursday. Spare trainers for climbing please! Not all children are attending forest school this half term. However every child will take part in a forest school take over day, this is where they will spend the entire day in forest school, how exciting! I will provide the date for this soon!

Coats - Please make sure you come to school with a coat to put on should the weather take a turn during the school day.

Year 6 Weekly Blog - So I tell you, whatever you ask for through prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Mark 11:24

‘Faith’ has been the centre of our prayer and reflection this week. During our Wednesday word and teacher’s liturgy on Thursday we have listened and reflected on the meaning of Sunday’s gospel Luke 17:5-10. In the gospel we hear the disciples ask Jesus to give them more faith and Jesus’ response is most profound: even if they had faith like a mustard seed they could tell a mulberry tree to move from where it is in the ground and plant itself in the sea. What better place than to hold our liturgy around our reading tree in the library! We have looked at the metaphorical meaning of the gospel and how Jesus is telling us that even if we only have a small amount of faith we can do amazing things. Even if we can’t move trees, we might be able to make big changes to the world around us. This has linked beautifully to our RE lessons this week, where we have looked at the Laudato Si- Pope Francis’ letter to us, urging us to look after our common home- planet earth- and how we are all called to be stewards.
