Year 4 homework for over the half term holidays

No formal homework as such over the holidays but it would be really good if you could focus on your times tables and read a good book ready to quiz when you return

I have handed out some times tables tests that we do in class where you could ask someone to time you and then mark them together (as we do in class)

I will not be collecting these in to mark - it is for you to use them to help you. You also have the songs below if there are still some you are shaky on. Of course, you can work on TTrockstars to increase your rock star status and will set you some ‘Beat the teacher’ challenges on Rockslam.

Winmarleigh Day 3!

What a wonderful fews day it has been- your children have been wonderful from start to finish. They have embraced every moment and every activity! I bet you can’t wait to hear all about it! Today we have had children on the giant swing, problem solving and up Jacob’s ladder- they will most definitely be tired tonight, so early nights will be needed.

READING

The children will be visiting the library this Friday - our final day. They will be bringing this book and a couple of books that match their ZPD. Please read daily - a break from this routine can have an impact over 2 weeks. Reading underpins all learning.

MATHS

We are now ready to tackle division problems. Please enter your TT Rockstars account and when you go into “Jamming” please select Division Only or Multiplication and Division. I’ve attached the image of the Jamming page to show you the buttons - have fun. Remember we can use skip counting to find out how many equal groups make the total.

SPELLING

Last week we explored words ending in the “l” sound. The spellings had different letters at end - le al il al - gosh it was tricky!!!

Play zones with your child:

This games works in a similar way to the ‘Corners’ party game.  Place -le, -el, -al, -il on paper in four corners of the room.  These need to be large enough to see from a distance. Provide paper and chunky pens in each zone.  The adult says aloud a focus word and then within the context of a sentence, e.g. pencil.  I’ve lost my pencil.  Children must decide which spelling is needed to write the focus word and then move to the appropriate ‘zone’.  Once in the zone, children can practise writing the word on the paper and decide whether it ‘looks right’

Winmarleigh!

As usual, when you are out in the countryside, the Wi-Fi can be problematic. Despite Mrs Harrison and her team’s best efforts, the photo uploading is not happening so I am waiting for them slowly to come through to me however they can. As they do arrive, I will pop them up on the blog for you to have a look at. I will just add them into this gallery so that they are all in one place.

The children have had a brilliant start to their first few days, taking part in lots of problem-solving tasks. The focus on this week is that the children need to work as a team to over come challenges together - some with vision and some without! Before the children left, I challenged them to do something difficult; something out of their comfort zone. I for one would not be going as high up that Jacob’s Ladder!

The children are all well, had their tea and having a great time! I will text when new photos are added so that you can see them and write a little update on here tomorrow. Prayer for better wi-fi!

Year 5 Weekly Blog 16.05.25- ‘A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down’

What a week it has been! The weather has been even warmer so play has been super exciting outside basking in the sun and lots of learning continues to take place inside the classroom. The end of the week’s focus all turned to Year 5 as we hosted our Krispy Kreme Donut Fundraising Day. Lots of children helped contribute to organising the event such as picking up boxes from the office, selling and packing donuts and delivering boxes to class.

With the day invested so much into donuts, we spent the morning out in the sun as some children walked to the promenade for their swimming gala trials whilst everyone else had an extra day of forest school!

This week, we have been learning…

• Maths- We have been smashing 2 digit x 2 digit numbers with lots of children having a go at 3 digit x 2 digit. We have continued to practice multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 by shifting our digits across place value columns. This will come in handy as we move onto percentage of amounts next week.

• English- we have began writing our final discussion question after finishing our planning and collecting of research at the beginning of the week. It has been brilliant to see the children take more care of their presentation and really focus on their handwriting.

• History- It has been all things ‘witches’ in this weeks crime and punishment lesson. We looked into why so many people believed in witches in the 15th Century. We did this by conducting our very own witch hunt in search for the answers. We had fun going through the ‘how to spot a witch’ checklist, can you remember what was on it?

Conversation starters

• RE- We have been testing our conscience with some moral dilemmas in class. Do your parents know any good moral dilemmas that they can put you to the test with?

• English- We have began our discussions text topic and have been creating points of view for our school themed questions.

  Should all children learn how to swim?

  Share with your parents the reasons we came up with - for and against.

Let’s Celebrate

• Learner of the Week- This week our award goes to Tommy for being a determined and reflective learner. You have been so determined this week Tommy, especially during our maths lessons. You are powering through your times tables and are really getting to grips with short multiplication. Whenever you have needed just a bit of help, you have always asked and this has been really useful in your progression. Excellent work!

• Virtue Star of the Week- Our virtues for this half term are curious and active and our winner this week goes to Rory. You have been so active throughout all our curriculum Rory. Wanting to challenge yourself in maths by choosing really difficult numbers to multiply and also working to your best ability in our discussion writing.

Notices

• Homework- Please check the homework blog to keep on track of your child’s SPAG, multiplication and division practice and also their reading.

• Forest School- This will take place every Friday for this half term. You will be sent a text the previous night to make aware who is doing this on which day as the class are split into groups. The children will just need to bring in a change spare of clothes- ones suitable for outdoor activities and working within a forest environment. Long clothing will be needed (no shorts).

  The groups are;

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 16th May "Bring flowers of the fairest, bring blossoms the rarest."

We were so proud of our Year 4 Holy Communicants on Saturday. What a lovely and special event in their lives - and ours too! They were beautiful and so reverent. Round two this Saturday.

We had a lovely worship to our Queen of the May, Mary. We did the rosary together and we made flowers to crown Our Lady.

In Year 4 this week, children have examined how the church is structured. This has enabled them to learn more about Pope Leo. We have talked about the church as a body of Christ’s followers and that being in Holy Communion with Him means we can be Christ’s body on earth.

In our Happy mind session, we learned to relate properly to others by actively listening to them. Children tried listening without one of the key principles of listening - eg not making eye contact, not smiling, getting distracted etc We then talked about what this feels like and children said they felt hurt, ignored, not valued and sad. See pictures below!

This week in maths, children have been looking at how to magnify numbers by altering their place value and make them ten times larger or one tenth times the size (ten times smaller) This led to us making products ten or one hundred times the size when the factor is magnified by 10.

This week in our English lessons, we have learned how to combine setting and character descriptions when describing ‘The Goddess of the Emerald Lake.” We have now met Rasvani the Fire Fiend from the volcano. That will be a very different description indeed!

In History this week, children have looked at maps of the North of England to discover places where Vikings settled. When children found out typical Viking place name endings, they could figure this out..

In PE, we have been learning skills for upcoming rounders games! We have been focsing on aiming, catching and fielding.

Our learning certificate this week is another double whammy. A Lizzie Ladybird/Bobby Bee goes to Lettie for really striving to improve in every aspect of learning. Your handwriting is so beautiful and your writing composition is coming along so nicely. You are so enthusiastic about everything!

Our virtue star this week is Joseph. We are so proud of what an active learner you are becoming. You are starting to challenge yourself to do quality writing and you are participating well, sometimes even demonstrating your understanding to others. Well done!

Holy Communion

Please bring your children dressed to the Presbytery around the side of the church for 9:15am. You can then take your place in church, where the benches will be labelled with your family name. Please do not take photos in the service. You may take them after the mass on the altar or in the gardens.

On Sunday 6th July we are having the last school family mass in church. On this day, we are asking that all our First Holy Communicants come to church dressed in their outfits. They are then invited with you to the parish centre for a Holy Communion breakfast, organised by the parish. Please could you fill in the form below so we can get ideas of numbers?

This week...

It has been a very different week at nursery. As part of our transition process (yes, it’s hard to believe that some of friends will be moving to Reception in September), we have spent each morning this week with the children and Reception team and it has been wonderful! Everybody learned and played together beautifully. I don’t envisage any upset in September.

Worship

May is the Month of Mary. We have been discussing how Mary is honoured during the month of May. We have talked about:

• Where you can find a Mary worship table in nursery

• What to put on a Mary worship table

• That flowers commonly associated with Mary

• and what else can go on our Mary worship table

  We have also all painted a picture of Mary to put on our Mary’s Month display.

  On Friday this week some of nursery will be joining Reception on a visit and tour of Our Lady’s church with Father Peter. We are hoping to pop in and have refreshments at the Social Centre afterwards. Such a busy day.

Visit from Pemberton’s farm

On Wednesday Farmer Tom brought some of his animals from his farm to show us. He brought Pixie a calf born prematurely in February, twin dairy calves ( one was called Mary, how apt for Mary’s Month!), two lambs (one was called Baaaaarbara!!) and a farm dog called Storm. We watched as Farmer Tom fed the lambs their milk from a bottle, what a lot of noise they made!

Hello everyone and welcome to this week's blog 

The weather has been glorious this week and we have made the most of every moment. We have carefully tended to our garden this week as we have made sure they have had plenty of water to drink. We also watered the newly planted trees on the school field.

We were excited to meet number block number 9 this week. We have explored different ways of making 9. One of our friends said " it's 3 sets of 3s". Another said "it's a square". Can your child count 9 objects? 

We have been busy practicing for Sports Day. This week we have concentrated on jumping to see how far we can jump. Why not have a jumping contest this weekend. Who can jump the furthest?

Emma’s Blog

Hello everyone.

It's been hot this week, but the children have still been having lots of fun.

We decided to use to make cress sandwiches for snack time with the cress that we have been growing. The children buttered their own bread, a great skill for practicing their fine motor skills and for life…we always need toast in the morning!. We then cut and sprinkled the cress on to the bread. The children then had a go at folding the bread in half, which was a bit tricky. The children loved their cress sandwiches, they couldn't believe that they were eating something that they had grown from seeds.

The children have been making castle turrets or towers using shapes. They drew around their chosen shapes then drew someone hiding inside the turret. The children drew their mummies, Rapunzel or their friends in the castle.

I can't believe we only have one week left before we break up for May half term.

Meet number 9

This week we have started to explore number 9!! Numberblock Nine arrives in Numberland, finds a friend in Four, sings a song about squares... and sneezes! Learn all about the number 9 with Numberblock Nine! Click here to meet 9!

We are learning to:

• Say the counting numbers to 9. The children should recognise the cardinal principle of counting that the last number counted represents the entire set of objects counted.

• Partitioning and combining to 9. At the beginning of the episode Nine is formed from combining One and Eight and then partitioned again.

• 9 and 4 are square numbers. Although the children are not formally introduced to square numbers until much later, this episode provides an opportunity to look at both the structure of squares with 4 equal sides and corners, and square numbers that make a shape with the same number of blocks down as across. Identifying pattern and seeing structure in number is important to early maths development.

Swimming Gala Information

The children swam so well today at the trials - we are taking them all to the gala next Friday. Mr Cornwell is busy working out races and teams. Some children will do 1 race, some more - but the focus is on the team! The arrangements are as follows…

Children will need to be dropped off at Palatine Leisure Centre for 8:40am next Friday. There is lots of space for parents to stay and cheer - it is recommended - this event is great!

They will need to bring with them their swim wear, their swimming hats for long hair, goggles, towel and hair brush. The event is due to finish around 11:45am, at which point the children will need bringing back to school to have their lunch. They will be booked into the 12:30pm sitting. Do work together to help each other out with lifts and let us know if you need any support too.

Maths Mastery Parent Project final survey

Dear Parents,

We are seeking to give the children confidence their number facts and recall them with ease. We will be running the program again next year in KS 1.
