Year 6 Weekly Blog: “Lest We Forget"

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them… this week is always a poignant week as we stop and remember all of those fallen victims of war and conflict. Our focus of the week has been on the word ‘Remembrance’ and joined together in prayer in a beautiful litrugy that helped us remember all the people who have died in God’s friendship are like these sparks. They are free and completely alive with God– living in eternity. We have wrote the names of those who we will remember on wooden crosses which we will lay at the cenotaph next week at the Remembrance service.

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

This half term, we are looking at what it means to be faithfilled and hopeful. Both of these qualities will be really important as we journey towards half term, having faith in oursleves, others and most importantly God. With faith and love, comes hope, hope that we can achieve the things we want to and hope in others.

The week has flown by and we have done so much exciting and challenging learning. We have read more of our class novel this week, looked at the reign of Queen Elizabeth, the defeat of the Spanish Armada and looked closely at singificant women found in the old testament. This week we met with Year 5, to moderate and peer mark our writing, which the children found very interesting and helped them to see what they need to work on next …

Bikeability

We loved our Bikeability this week, all children worked so hard on mastering the skills needed for level 2 next Friday!

Joseph, , we are so proud of your resilience and independence in your lessons this week! We have loved your ‘I CAN’ attitude and how you have independently done your work with very little input from the teachers- this shows just what you are capable of when you put your mind to it!

Faithfilled and Hopeful butterflies

This half term we will be on the lookout for all the children that are intention in their actions. Children who show great faith in themselves, others and God. We will also be spotting children who are hopeful, who show hope for the future, enabling us to trust ourselves and those around us with the decisions that will shape our future. These children are the role models of the school. This week we thank Toby for always being faithfilled and hopeful.

  • If any children would like to help Mrs Tierney in forest school during their lunch breaks next week then please can they bring their forest school clothes on monday (trainers that don’t mind getting muddy and long sleeve trousers/ jumpers).

Maths- Please keep going on TT Rockstars- 5 minutes every night! Complete the column subtractions in your book.

Spelling- Next week we will be looking at the letter string ‘ough’, looking at the different pronunciations it makes in different words. Please collect as many as you can so we can sort them in sound boxes next week.

OPTIONAL HOME LEARNING FOR THE HALF TERM TO ENHANCE OUR CURRICULUM

AUTUMN 1 OPTIONAL LEARNING

Welcome back!

We have certainly hit the ground running this week! Our learning landscape has changed to help us encounter new and exciting adventures all about about ‘dinosaurs’.

We have created a dinosaur world and using our funky fingers disentangled some dinosaurs which have become tangled up in wool and string. Using scissor snips we have set them free!!

We have also been finding our about the origins of Bonfire Night and how to stay safe. We made some fabulous firework paintings. On Wednesday we make firework sparkle breadsticks, they were scrummy! We even learnt a new song called Five Fat Fireworks, click here to sing it at home.

Worship

This week in Worship we have started our ‘Prophecy and promise’ topic. We spoke about how Mary was chosen by God to be Jesus’ mother. Our key words were MARY, JESUS, ANGEL and BABY.

When we arrived at school we received a special letter. It invited us to learn all about Jesus and the wonderful story of how he was born. We all said, yes! We couldn’t wait to hear all about it! We watched a video all about Mary being visited by an angel, you can watch it here:

Our child led worship theme this week was ‘All Saints’. We spoke about how we can follow Jesus, live our lives well and be saints ourselves. Here is a video we watched after our Gospel reading.

We all sat in a circle and passed a hug around to share God’s love. We then discussed what our ‘superpower’ is so that we can be just like Saints and Jesus and share our power with the world. Some of our answers included sharing, helping and being kind. We are all amazing!

We spoke about how Mary had to trust God – we thought she might have been a bit scared and worried but she still said yes. We thought about how we could trust each other – we had a go with our elastic ring in the garden. We all stand in a circle and stretch it our further and further and then let go! We have to trust our friends to all let go at the same time! We love this game!

 Meet 4

Great news…we have met a new number…4! Click here to watch.

We found our that 4 appears in lots of contexts, such as four legs on a table. This week we have become ‘4 detectives’. Four has the special property of being a square number. We even made 4 into lots of different shapes.

Counting to 4

4 is a small number and counting to 4 provides lots of practice in developing the skills of counting such as on-to one correspondence and saying numbers in the correct order.

Recognition of 4 without counting (subitising)A group of four objects is easy to subitise (recognise without counting) and we are getting very good at this!

Next week is going to be just as busy so have a good rest this week end!

Year 6 Football A Tournament

As the boys will probably have told you tonight, we have had to withdraw out entry to the football tournament next week. Unfortuantly, the date for the tournament has now changed to the Friday of next week, due to venue issues, which clashes with the bikeability course that is already booked in for them. With it also being Day 2 when they will be out and about on the roads around school, this has to take priority and something that they have to complete.

There will be other opportunities for the boys to play in the Spring term and more tournaments to enter so we will hold out for that. I am sure amongst their other footballing commitments, this is something that can be passed for now. I know arrangements will have been made so I can only apologise; it is just something out of our control.

Year 3 Weekly Blog Friday 24th October

Autumn Term 1

And just like that the first half term has come to an end, the children have settled really well into year 3 - this half term has been a term of learning new routines and learning how to be year 3s! The children have done a great job and we are a great year 3 team.


This week we have listened to the Parable of the tax collector and the Pharisee, we thought about being humble and not boastful. We are all unique and should be proud and celebrate our qualities and achievements but we should also value and celebrate those of the people around us.

On Tuesday our prayer leaders led a beautiful worship in which we thought about those around who may need our prayer. As October is the month of the Rosary, we turned to our Mother Mary and asked her to keep these people in our prayer, we made scrolls and added them to our Rosary display.

Our learning this week…

English
We have focused on speech this week and taken on the part of characters in the story Weed by Quentin Blake. We used punctuation clues to identify speech in the text. We looked at picture form the Greenling story by Levi Fold and thought about what the characters would be saying in each picture. We recorded their speech in speech bubbles then in speech marks.

Maths
We’ve continued using the bridging strategy to add and subtract across the 100’s boundary.

Swimming

Our swimming stars this week (As chosen by the swimmers teachers) are: Leo T and Maya.
Swimming will continue after the half term break.

Harvest

Thank you for all your jam donations - as a school we collected a huge amount of food for our local food bank, you can find more info on Mrs Gregan’s blog.

Enrichment

On Wednesday afternoon the children enjoyed gardening with Mrs Hotchkiss and Mrs Mather. They harvested potatoes that were then enjoyed by the children and staff at lunchtime on Thursday - they were delicious.


Book looks and parents day.

It was lovely to see so many of you on Tuesday afternoon, sharing books and moment of pride with your children. Many of you said that you couldn’t believe how much work the children have completed in such a short space of time - they really have worked their socks off and I too am very proud of them.

Thank you for taking the time to come a discuss your children and how they have settled into Year 3 on Friday. It was lovely to hear so many positive comments.

Design Technology

The children have started the next unit of DT work with Mrs Mather - they are sewing. Mrs Mather has asked the children to practise tying knots over half term, small knot in wool or thread - this is in preparation them securing thread when sewing.

Choir and Autumn 2 term clubs

There are lots of extra curricular opportunities for the children next half term from choir to Christmas crafts, judo and archery!

Drawing-Developing Drawing Skills.

What a busy term we have had! The children have been learning how to add detail into their art by learning the four rules of shading and using their observational skills to draw realistic flowers and seeds. We have then then gone on and let our imaginations run wild as we created our own imaginary blooms. With this done, the children recreated these in the form of Digital Art. They came up with fantastic ideas that would make any garden look colourful and bright!

We are now moving on to Textiles where we will be learning key sewing skills to make cushions.

Drawing- Emotions, Depth and Movement.

What a busy half term we have had! Throughout our unit, we have drawn on a memory we hold most dear to enhance our drawing techniques. Thinking about composition, we have looked at foreground, middle ground and back ground and how we use these to enhance the focal point of an art piece. We have taken inspiration from Charlie Mackesy (The boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse) to refine our drawing skills in readiness to create a print. The children’s work has been exceptional as they have explored new techniques to add to their final piece.

We have now moved onto Design and Technology, where we will be making a mechanical book inspired by Greek Mythology.

This weeks learning landscape....

A week full of finding out. On Monday we went on an adventure to find out about wheat! Our friend Pip took us to a field of wheat. We explored how the wheat was cut down and separated into seeds and stalks by the combine harvester, before it went off to be ground into flour. We were then ready to make bread!!! We buttered and ate the bread at snack time, it was so yummy we made more the following day!

We have been even busier this week with our learning challenges. We have practised our:

  • writing

  • numbers

  • sorting

  • shapes

    as well as tending the garden. We swept up nine bags of leaves and planted some rosemary. The children have put it in our small green house and are checking it every day incase it needs a spray of water.

    All week we have been dancing…in the garden and around the nursery and on Wednesday we joined enrichment afternoon with reception. Mrs. Harrison taught us some fabulous dance moves so we could samba around the hall…watch out Strictly Come Dancing!

Worship

This week our worship has centred around Harvest. We all have said ‘thank you to God for our wonderful world and everything he has provided for us. We sang the hymn ‘All things bright and beautiful’ to focus our minds on how beautiful our world really is and how we are all tasked with taking good care of it. On Thursday morning nursery joined the whole school for our Harvest Festival. A big ‘thank you for all your generous donations.

As we have been in a dancing mood we celebrated in nursery by dancing The Harvest Samba. Click here to have a go at home!

This week your child will come home this week with a special Luce key ring. Luce, the official mascot of the Jubilee 2025. Luce is a pilgrim dressed as a typical traveler: a yellow anorak to protect herself from the elements, dirty boots that bear witness to the path she has already traveled, a missionary cross around her neck and the pilgrim's staff in her hand. Particularly evocative are Luce's eyes, which shine with an intense light: they symbolize the hope that is born in the heart of every pilgrim, and reflect the desire for spirituality and connection with the divine. They act as a reminder of the universal message of peace and brotherhood. The choice of a mascot like Luce is part of a broader context, aimed at reaching new generations and promoting intergenerational dialogue. The mascot not only represents the Jubilee, but is also a symbol of community, of welcome and of sharing.

Lastly, can I just say what a fabulous half term it has been. We have been on lots of adventure, some funny, some scary but we have all enjoyed being and learning together. Please have a good rest if you can over the half term because when we get back we have lots more adventures to go on…and Christmas! Nursery will reopen after the holidays on Monday 3rd November.

Year 6 Weekly Blog ‘Autumn tells is the season that teaches us that change can be beautiful’

Harvest is a time of thanksgiving and gratitude; to thank God for the things we have and all that God has given to us. Our liturgies this week have been centred around this and our RE this week looked also at the smallest seed- the mustard seed. Year 6 have been reflecting on the parables that Jesus shared with us that taught us about the Kingdom of God and how this can start off so small within us, but as we love and follow in Jesus’ footsteps this can grown in to something more powerful.

Our Children’s Liturgy was all about Justice and praying for those people around the world that are faced with injustice- thank you boys for another moving worship…

I can’t believe we have come to the end of our first half term in Year 6! It has gone by so quick, but what a start Year 6 have made. They have all grown so much in the last few weeks, developing their independence and reflecting on the areas they know they need to work on- we couldn’t be more prouder of them. Make sure they get lots of rest this short break, so that they are ready and raring to go for another busy, run-up to Christmas. It has been so lovely to talk to you all at the parent’s meetings, celebrating the successes of each one of them. I hope you also enjoyed sharing your children’s books, where I am sure you can see how hard they are all working and how much pride they take in their work.

We have now read up to chapter 10 of our class novel and it has definitely left us wanting more- I can’t wait to read more when we get back and find out just what Daniel’s next test will be! We have looked closer in to the characters, finding evidence from the book as to whether they are good or evil and have even wrote a diary entry as the main character. In Maths we are continuing with our ‘redistribution’ strategy, compensating numbers to make tricky calculations easier to manage! In History, we looked closely as to why Henry broke away from the Catholic church, doing a spot of drama, advising him, to help him make his decision. What a busy week…

Year 6 had a great time back in year 5 with Mr Cornwell for enrichment! The children spent an hour playing card games and having great fun, as you can see from the photos …

We also had a very special visit from the police to talk about Halloween and Bonfire night safety …

 

Bikeability is the first Friday back after half term (7th November) and the following Friday, so please remember to bring your bikes and helmets, unless you stated on the online form that you need to borrow and bike. Please come in at usual time and leave the bikes in the bike rack, with helmets attached. PE kits need to be worn this day, raincoat and bottles of water please. On the Friday children complete level 1, this assesses the child’s competence on a bike and whether they are safe enough to progress to level 2 the following week, where it will be on the road around the school. The isntructors will not pass any child that they feel would be a danger to themselves or others, so as well as their bike skills they will also be monitoring the children’s listening skills. We will find out on the Firday who has passed to move on to the next level the following week.
